2021 Energy Code Update Series – Alterations
This 90-minute webinar on May 15, with special guest Ben Roush of FSI Engineers, will summarize the “alterations” requirements of the Seattle and Washington state energy codes and offer suggestions for potential design solutions. It will provide an overview of Chapter 5, with a special focus on replacing existing gas or electric resistance space heating and water heating systems with heat pump systems, and with optional use of the new “fossil fuel compliance path” for equipment replacements. Alterations to envelope, lighting, electrical, water heating, metering, and HVAC systems are covered, as well as Seattle’s energy code rules for change of occupancy, change of space conditioning, or “substantial alterations.”
Unlock HVAC Energy Savings and Save Money by Integrating Lighting Controls
Many commercial buildings waste energy by conditioning unoccupied spaces, because their HVAC systems lack occupancy sensors. A simple lighting retrofit can solve this problem, when the new networked lighting control (NLC) system provides occupancy data to the BMS.

HVAC Issues in 2021 WA & Seattle Commercial Energy Codes
From March 20, 2025, presented by Duane Jonlin, Seattle Department of Construction and Inspection, and Ben Roush, PE, FSI Engineers
Building technologies are evolving, codes are getting tighter, customer values include more than just the bottom line, and the workforce needs to catch up--and stay caught up. The Lab has great education and resources for you, but no one entity can do it all. Luckily, Building Potential's Smart Buildings Center, UW's Integrated Design Lab, and BPA's Comfort Ready Home offer unique education and services that complement what the Lab delivers. We're excited to have them come share how they can help meet your needs.
